In class on Tuesday November 18th we were getting ready to start our I-search paper. As a little practice Professor Mangini wanted us to go on to The New York Times and go to the Room for Debate section and pick an article out and write a brief summary about it and write a summary about what the Debater's said. The article I read was Is Streaming Good for Musicians?
In this article it talks about if streaming artist music good for them. This debate was brought back up when Taylor Swift took down her new album from Spotify. People think Taylor Swift brought down her album to drive up record sales.
Suzanne Vega is a songwriter and singer.
Vega supports Taylor Swifts idea to pull her album off spotify. She says "Right now no one can realistically expect to make a living off streaming their music (or from CD sales and downloads, for that matter)". She says streaming wont make you money but it will help bring people to your live shows.
George Howard: is an associate professor of music business and management at Berklee College of Music and a strategic adviser to a variety of creative companies and individuals.
Howard understands why Taylor Swift took her music of spotify. He says "
You can do the math. If it takes a thousand streams of a song to make what the label grosses from the sale of one downloaded album, the decision to pull the record from Spotify is an obvious one from a financial standpoint.
